Large format/oversized folding can be a profitable niche for printers. Common applications for such work include: maps, posters, promotional materials, signage, direct mail, kids growth charts, wiring diagrams, blueprints and more!
LARGE FORMAT FOLDING IS MORE THAN JUST MAPS
Take a look at the following project we recently did for a client:
This step-down accordion folded product catalog started life as an oversized sheet of paper. The decreasing panel widths allow the overhangs to function as index tabs, which increase product functionality.
Bottom line: Our client designed a cost effective, eye catching piece that works as a booklet ... without any binding.
FILM LAMINATION AND SYNTHETIC STOCKS
If your need water resistance and/or extreme durability, at some point, you’ll probably consider using synthetic stocks or a laminated sheet.
Film Lamination: Due to “memory” issues, film laminated sheets present extra challenges during the folding process. Unless special finishing techniques are used, large format laminated pieces don’t lie flat, even if they’re pre-scored. Fortunately, there are finishing techniques that can be used to ensure that laminated pieces lie flat. This means your outdoor guides, road maps and similar products are completely user-friendly.
Synthetic stocks: Yupo, Poly Art, Tyvek and other synthetic stocks are difficult, but not impossible to fold. If you are running a job printed on synthetic stock, let your bindery services partner know in advance. (For example, please allow enough drying time!) Careful planning will steer you around these potential post press land mines.
