Gate Folding

Folding is often seen as a "bridge" production step that doesn't much affect the appearance or functionality of a project. Although that's often the case, creative folding can be used as a key design element that makes products more attractive, versatile and functional. Gate folding is one style that can meet those requirements, and it can be performed in a variety of configurations to meet specific usage or design needs.

Plenty of Design Options
Gate folding involves a series of parallel folds that fold inward from opposite directions to meet at either a center panel ("open center") or center fold ("closed center"). This makes gate folding ideal for applications where two products or services will be compared "side-by-side", such as a promotional pamphlet or product catalog, or for placement at the center of stitched booklets. There are multiple styles of gate folds available, including single, double and triple gates (one, two and three panels on each gate, respectively) as well as "unbalanced" gates with a closed center design. Gate folded panels can be glued to form pockets for inserted products or literature, and can include short panels down to 2".

Gate Folding Planning Tips

- At Rickard Bindery, small-format gate folds can be final-sized down to 1-5/8" x 2-1/8".

- Plow folding machines can handle gate folds on thick stock, although rotary or die scoring must be performed beforehand.

- Gate folds made at right angles to initial folds will wrinkle. This is due to paper having a third dimension - thickness - and cannot be overcome.
