Sometimes, the seemingly small details are the ones that make the biggest impression. Take the appearance of a fold, for example. If the fold is cracked, it can detract from the overall appearance of the piece - even if it's otherwise beautifully produced. In addition, the nature of today's print projects can make folding quite a challenge. Heavy ink and coating coverage, thick stocks and tricky sequences are all commonly used in many print applications, and all pose challenges during folding.

At Rickard Bindery, we can perform two-sided rotary scoring in one pass, making accordion folded products such as this a breeze to produce. High-quality rotary scoring is the ideal solution when high-quality projects call for accurate folding. Rotary scoring quality is often equivalent to die scoring, but at a fraction of the cost and turnaround time. Here are a few tips to keep in mind regarding rotary scoring:
To Score or Not to Score
Rotary scoring is usually recommended on stock starting at 100lb text weight and up. Projects printed on lighter stocks typically do not need to be scored. However, if lighter weight sheets are folded against the grain, contain heavy ink coverage, or have a heavily-calendared finish, scoring may be needed. Additionally, when folding accuracy becomes critical ie: dealing with color breaks, we may recommend using a score.
Two Sides, One Pass
Perhaps the biggest advantage of rotary scoring is that it allows for scoring and perfing on both sides of the sheet in a single pass. This can be achieved because certain rotary machines incorporate two shafts into the scoring process. Therefore, not only is there the flexibility to score top and bottom, but the same side of a sheet can be "formed" twice. One shaft's rotary wheel can soften the paper, while the second firms up the score. This "double hit" allows for greater control in the scores depth.
The Rickard Bindery Advantage
As your single resource for a complete range of folding needs, Rickard Bindery uses our Rollem TR high-speed rotary scoring system in two ways that directly benefit you. First, we can score, start/stop perf, and "double hit" entire press sheets (42" x 42" max). This can save a trip to the die cutter for a channel score and still allows for multiple up efficiency. Second, we typically cut products down to 1-up and then simply score or perf before directly running the sheet into our variety of folding units. This way the job is completed in a single pass, while still allowing for the quality you've come to expect from Rickard Bindery.
