EZ Release Gluing vs. Wafer Seals

Have you ever received a flier, catalog or other mailed piece that arrived torn, crumpled or otherwise uninviting? Folded mail pieces need some sort of closure at the open edge to ensure delivery without destruction. Let's take a look at two popular sealing solutions available:

EZ Gluing
EZ release glue is a spot-gluing application that holds pages or products in place until the consumer separates them with a light pull. This option is best used for projects with wraparound covers or roll-folded pieces.

There are three main varieties of EZ release glue. Hot melt formulas are heavy, making them great for thick stocks. Wax-based glues are lighter and leave little residue, but may have trouble holding thick stocks. Latex EZ release formulas are also light and low in residue, but they contain ammonia, which can react adversely to aqueous coatings.

Advantages - EZ release glue got its name for a reason: It's easy to open, and is easily rubbed away once you do. Production is also easy and efficient when performed inline during folding.

Challenges - EZ-release glue is not to be used for sealing booklets or other multi-page pieces, as the glue will only affix the two panels to which it adheres. It’s also important to match the adhesive formula with your application to prevent tearing and staining. Consult with us to determine the most successful combination of coatings, paper and glue.

Wafer Seals
Wafer seals often take the form of small stickers that are placed at the face trim of booklets or other folded pieces. Wafer seals are available in Mylar and paper substrates, including translucent varieties.

Advantages - Wafer seals are ideal for sealing magazines, booklets or other multi-page mailers. They're also printable, allowing you to place a message or design on them. Translucent seals won't obscure text and images underneath.

Challenges - Though pages likely won't rip during mailing, they will when in the hands of the user. The tight seal created by clear Mylar seals makes products difficult to open, which usually lead to the user tearing the paper. On the other hand, paper wafer seals obscure printing on your pieces, so there are choices to be made.
