The Advantage of Welded Seam Envelopes

Even as technology grows, direct mail pieces and publication inserts remain a staple of many effective consumer marketing programs. Welded seam envelopes are an efficient format for these pieces, as they allow a response card, envelope and supplemental information to be consolidated into a single product.

At Rickard Bindery, multi-panel welded seam envelopes like this one are perfed, glued and folded in a single pass for timely and efficient production.

Inline, Single Pass
At Rickard Bindery, welded seam envelopes are produced inline in a single pass. First, remoist glue is applied as the sheet is perfed and scored. Then at a right angle the pocket is formed by applying permanent glue, which is placed at both the head and foot of the piece. From there, the final folds are made according to customer specifications. Additional panels can be incorporated into the piece for use as response cards, take-away information panels and coupons, while still retaining the ability to perform remoist gluing, perfing, scoring, folding and permanent gluing in one pass.

Layout Tip: When designing a welded seam envelope into a saddle-stitched book, be sure to include appropriate binding laps. This allows the machine to operate at full production speed with inline trimming and minimal spoilage. Let Rickard Bindery help you plan your project to ensure binding laps and other margins are accurate.

Materials tip: Although welded seam pieces can be produced from a variety of substrates, uncoated paper works best with permanent seam glue. Also, if your piece is designed with a reply card, pen ink and pencil graphite typically appear clearer on uncoated paper.

Planning tip: Be sure to plan ahead. It is important to remember what downstream operation may come next. For instance, is the product going to be imaged for mailing? If so be careful! Laser imaging equipment can sometimes activate the remoist. Checking ahead of time can save hours of frustration.
