Marketers continue to pursue new ways of getting information in front of consumers. As manufacturers continue to increase the amounts of information that they put in smaller packaging, the need for innovative binding solutions grows. Small-format saddle stitching is one increasingly popular solution for putting content-heavy instruction and promotional information into the hands of consumers.
With small-format saddle stitching, directions for product usage can be included inside the packaging for products such as beauty supplies, consumer electronics and pharmaceuticals. Some companies are using this binding style to cross-promote product lines. For example, a beverage company can create a miniature drink recipe book with ingredients that include several of its branded products.
How Small?
Products that qualify for small-format saddle stitching include any printed product with a backbone of less than 5.25 inches, or a backbone to face trim that is less than 3.5 inches. At Rickard, the smallest product we can stitch automatically in a two-up format is a 2.5-inch by 3.5-inch backbone. When it comes to one-up formats, the minimum dimension we can produce is a 3.875-inch backbone.
Insights
You may be wondering how a 2.5 inch spine to face dimension can be accomplished. Simply design the book as though it were going to be finished at 3.125 inches. This allows the signatures to be carried from the pocket, down onto the saddle and into a specially modified trimming unit. It will be in the trimming process that the excess paper, along with the binding laps and trims, is removed to produce a book that measures 2.5 inches in the spine to face dimension.
