Remoist Gluing: Direct Mail's Best Friend

Remoist glue allows for versatility in the design of mailers. Remoist applications can be performed inline with other postpress functions, making remoist gluing cost-effective and efficient.

Here are few tips to take advantage of design options for mail pieces while maximizing production.

Applying remoist glue to direct mail pieces can be
performed inline with other production processes,
such as folding and trimming.
Proper adhesion — Varnishes restrict the adhesion properties of remoist glue. Remove flood varnishes from the area where the remoist glue will be applied and from the opposing surface to assure that once activated the two sides will stick together. Heavy ink coverage and stock choice can also limit the adhesion of remoist glue. Your bindery can test for proper adhesion by preparing a product sample using the actual project stock.

Laser problems — A big advantage to hot melt remoist is that it dries fast, allowing for pieces to run other postpress processes quickly. But be careful when using laser or inkjet printers for personalization. Hot melt remoist is applied at temperatures between 300 degrees and 325 degrees. But most laser printers and some inject printers can heat up to 250 degrees, which will reactivate the remoist glue. One way of avoiding this problem is to run the pieces through a laser printer for personalization prior to postpress processing.

Consider attachments— Items such as magnets, plastic cards and even small product sample packets can be applied to mail pieces. Depending on the design of the carrier and the item itself, attaching can be performed on either the outside or inside of the piece with excellent placement precision. Make certain the substrate is strong enough to carry the attachment. The minimum recommendation is a 7-pt. stock for most attaching applications. Consult your bindery in the design phase if you have concerns about the weight of the attachment.

Layout planning for welded seam envelopes — Remoist goes great with welded seam and bangtail products. It gives end-users a convenient way to securely submit either information, money, or both. In most cases, welded seam and bangtail envelopes are produced one-up. For heavier stocks make sure to lay the piece out so that the folds are going with the grain. Don’t forget that all of your fold varieties are available with these products, i.e. gate, roll and accordion. If you are unsure about panel sizing when laying out your welded seam envelopes, consult your bindery.

The Rickard Advantage
At Rickard Bindery we can combine gate, barrel and accordion folding with welded seam gluing, start/stop perforation and spot gluing, all inline with the remoistenable glue application. We have multiple units to handle any capacity. Call Rickard Bindery today to begin planning your next successful direct mail project.
