Remoistenable Glue

Our goal is to provide Rickard Bindery customers and industry friends with information that helps win business. If your company’s print professionals are the ones in your marketplace offering design ideas and layout expertise, you will capture your fair market share.

Mid-volume projects such as these are a natural fit for hot-melt remoistenable gluing.

Remoistenable Glue
Remoistenable glue is a versatile finishing process that can be applied to a wide variety of products. For high-volume applications with quantities reaching into the millions, remoistenable glue usually is cold-applied on a web press. Typical envelope manufacturers use a water soluble remoistenable emulsion process and tend to be competitive in the mid-size to large run lengths. For short to mid-size runs, say 5,000 to 150,000 pieces, hot-melt remoistenable extrusion application is usually the best choice.

The Need
Welded seam envelopes allow private information and forms of payment to be returned to the sender. Typical users include banks and financial institutions, hospital and healthcare providers and academic organizations. When planning your next envelope or direct mail project, please remember one important dimension: 30 inches wide. Go more than 30 inches and you will run into production problems.

Production Planning Guidelines
The 30” dimension is so important because that is the maximum width for nearly all hot-metl remoist machines. Remember, the product is feed in widthwise at which time the remoist, perfs and any scores are applied. Next, permanent seam glue can be applied to form the envelope. From this point on, most folds are possible, including roll folds (over & overs), accordion folds and gatefolds. If your product has a bangtail panel, make sure that it is the first fold following the remoist application.

In addition:
  • Although not mandatory, it’s best to choose a stock between 3.5 and 8 points.
  • For projects requiring extra security or for added customer ease-of-use, consult with your bindery about adding double-sided tape instead of remoistenable glue.
  • Since hot-melt remoistenable glue is heat activated, it is not recommended for use in imaging equipment without prior testing.
  • Remoistenable glue strips should have an opposing adhesion area of light ink and no other coatings.

Bottom line: Remoistenable glue is an attractive, cost-effective method of adding significant value to the print process.
