Pop ups create a unique and eye-catching design. |
Nothing helps create or reinforce a brand like differentiation and one way to help achieve this is to create marketing materials that stand out. Pop-up designs are an interactive form of print and can help differentiate your customers’ products and services.
Since print is primarily a static form of communication, any movement that occurs during product use will get noticed. Some printing techniques, like lenticular for example, can approximate movement, but more options exist in the bindery. Pop-up folds do move during use and can create excitement when an image of a mountain rises, a diamond ring emerges or people’s faces peer over what had been the highest plane on a previously folded piece. Pop-up folds add an element of surprise, which can enhance a selling message in a uniquely tangible way.
How They Work
The mechanics behind pop-up folds are easy to understand. A pop-up design starts out as a die-cut 4-panel piece with a 45° angle perforation. The pop-up area is pushed inward so when the piece is closed, the pop-up area remains sandwiched between the two folded outer panels. Consider the three styles of pop-ups:
Basic 4-Pager
These are quick and easy to plan and produce, can be easily incorporated into perfect bound applications. The notable design characteristic of this style is the missing corner.
Multiple Panel
This pop-up design is incorporated into a gate, accordion or roll folded piece. Properly designed, this style will temporarily hide the missing corner and can create intrigue as the piece unfolds.
Double Thick Glued Pop-Ups
This is the premium style of pop-up because it conceals the missing corner.

The concealed corner makes this the most popular pop-up design. |
Tech Tips & Traps
- Pop-ups work best on stock between 6pt and 10pt.
- Perforation depth is always important, but is especially so on either very thin or thick stock.
- 45 degree angle perforations are necessary for machine folding.
- The maximum 9”pop-up width can be achieved only on some designs
- In terms of what is practical, the maximum total height shouldn’t exceed 17”.
- The height of a pop-up should be measured from the bottom of the V to the top of the pop-up. Be sure this measurement is not greater than the pieces final width. If it is the pop-up will stick out of the side of the folded product.
- Have your bindery OK a press proof and die sample before any work is started.
