When you think of saddle stitching, does a standard 8-1/2 x11” format come to mind? The wonderful world of saddle stitching is far more varied than this. Add more value. Help your customers design saddle stitched layouts that create eye appeal, generate interest and provide more bang for the buck.
By folding your signatures in non-standard configurations, your finished product can have foldouts that:
- Roll fold out from the spine
- Open to the head or foot of a page
- Create gatefold spreads
Interesting Option
Let’s explore one concept in depth. We’re going to walk you through the creation of a unique 48-page stitched book that we produced earlier this year.
It all starts with the signature layout as depicted in figure 1. This is an intriguing version of a 16-page signature. It is important to note that since this is being machine folded, a die cut slot needs to be removed in order for the paper to fold properly. Most binderies will recommend a 3/8-inch slot be removed for this type of construction.
The first two folds happen simultaneously whereby panel “A” folds back, as panel B folds forward. In the final construction of the stitched book these sections will serve as “fold-up” 8 pagers as shown in Figure 2
Then, at right angle, the product folds three additional times: One parallel fold combined with two accordions. Don’t lose sight of where the spine falls – we’ve marked it in figure 3.
Now it’s time to pull the whole project together. After we folded the three forms, they were saddle stitched in a typical nested sequence, except that the end product yielded six 8-page foldouts instead of an ordinary 48-page book with 24 single leaves.
Not surprisingly, this distinctive eye-popping interactive brochure was produced for a well-known luxury automobile brand.
