Matchbook-Style Hang Tags- Combine Machine and Handwork to Produce a Big Marketing Tool in a Little Package

When you need a big sales pitch or in-depth product information in a small space, matchbook hang tags can do the trick. These are a specialized type of hang-tag or “necker.” Used most frequently on the bottlenecks of products such as wines, gourmet foods and cosmetics, the matchbook-style packaging hangs from a string and contains a miniature folded product flyer or value-added coupons. Easily attached, they can also hang from areas on other types of products like a button on clothing or an eyelet on shoes.

These unique pieces involve and intrigue customers, drawing them in as they open the matchbooks to reveal the contents inside.

These unique pieces involve and intrigue customers, drawing them in as they open the matchbooks to reveal the contents inside. The piece within is folded accordion-style then folded at right angles, and opens very much like a roadmap. Typically the piece gives added information about the product and its benefits to the consumer, for example where and how a wine is made, or how a unique fabric works to repel water. But manufacturers can also include incentive coupons for other products in their line, encouraging consumers to expand their brand use.

The Process: How do they do that?
The matchbook covers arrive at our bindery die-cut and round cornered to their one-up size. Already double scored, we fold the tiny 7/16” flap and glue it down in two locations. This is a critical step because it will ultimately serve as the product’s closure mechanism, holding it shut like a staple does on a matchbook.

With the covers folded and glued, the product is automatically string-tied. The glue-tabbed edge is fed into the machine as the leading edge then punched, and a two-inch black elastic loop is threaded through the hole.

Most often, the inner product is a many paneled informational sheet resembling a map. Using small format folding equipment, the piece is folded accordion-style and then folded again at right angles. Then the finishing work is completed by hand, as the cover is opened and the folded brochure is glued to the inside. The work is too small to be accomplished with attaching machinery. Finally the outside cover is tucked into the glued flap to create the matchbook appearance.

While no one can have a sales representative standing by their product as it sits on the shelf, always ready to answer consumers questions, hanging matchbook tags may be the next best thing. Many manufacturers are discovering these are an effective tool to continue or reinforce their existing sales pitch, offering useful value-added information to potential customers.
