Posters are popular for many reasons. Some are informational, such as employee safety notices in manufacturing facilities, but most are meant to be proudly displayed for a long time. For examples, look no farther than a typical teenager’s room. The logistical challenge is how to get posters from manufacturer to consumer in a way that’s appropriate for end use.

Usually, it doesn’t matter if employee safety notices and other kinds of informational posters have a few creases in them when displayed. Folding these types of products to a mailable flat size saves a lot of money in the bindery and during mailing. There are times, however, when the plan is to deliver an un-creased sheet. The solution: poster rolling. |

Poster rolling experts can roll your project and prepare it for either bulk shipping or individual mailing. It has been our experience that ambitious plans to mail often run against budget constraints. The amount of air in the final package, as well as the size and shape can greatly affect shipping costs. If it’s possible to ship posters to one location prior to individual distribution, do it.
Lets look at how cost can influence packaging decisions. In general, there is approximately .20 to .25 cents in labor associated with poster rolling. Rubber banding is the lowest cost option for preparing individually rolled posters for bulk distribution, and usually runs less than a penny a piece. While rubber banding does a nice job of easily keeping the poster rolled, it does leave outside unprotected. For about 3¢, your posters can be inserted into a plastic sleeve, which places this option one peg higher on the quality ladder, yet it is still cost-effective.
If your project is going to be sent via USPS mail system to individuals, crimped end mailing tubes run about 15¢ each, but are neither completely protected at the ends nor are tamper proof. Capped-end mail tubes run in the 50¢ range and will be able to safely withstand travel through the USPS mail stream.
Production Note: Take extra caution when designing a poster rolling project that calls for a laminate. For obvious reasons thick laminates will cause problems when rolling, but when planned in conjunction with a laminating expert, this can add considerable value and longevity to the project.
