Common applications include point-of-purchase coupons for grocery and other consumer products, branded memo pads, “thought-of-the-day” style tear-off calendars, school supplies, notebook pads and padded maps for the rental car and travel industries.

Market Opportunity
There is a market for point-of-purchase pads of folded coupons and other promotional materials. Beverage, food, cosmetics and retail-driven consumer product companies have turned to padded shelf talkers to do the final point-of-purchase selling for them. As shown in the photo to the right, a glued plastic clip can be affixed to the pad’s chipboard backing for easy insertion into standard retail displays.
Automatic Production
Pads may be produced on either old-style manual padding clamps or sleek automatic production lines. Although the capital investment required for automatic padding systems isn’t cheap, the production advantages of automation are clear:
- High speed production, up to 1800 pads per hour one up, or faster if multiple-up layouts are used.
- Manual production requires a lengthy curing time. Curing is immediate with machine production and no separating of pads is required.
- Consistent glue thickness control, which reduces costs and improves final appearance.
When considering outsourced padding services, be aware that glue for padding typically is designed for one-page at a time easy tear-off. Check with your bindery if you have any multiple-up imposition questions because chop cuts are less costly than bleed take-out trims. The minimum padded edge size for one-up automatic production is 3-inches, but multiple up production removes this barrier and increases production efficiency.
