String tying is a popular method for attaching items such as coupons and tags to products ranging from liquor bottles to clothing. While it seems like a straightforward process, there's more to it than meets the eye. The two main components to string tying - the string and the attached piece - come in a variety of sizes, colors and finishes. Let's review choices, tips and tricks for each:
String
String choices are plentiful. There are more than a dozen standard colors, including gold and silver metallics, as well as several construction materials and finishes. Standard or elastic string can be specified based on the details of your application:
Elastic - As their name implies, elastic strings can be stretched to snug tightly around the neck of a bottle or other carrier. Elastic string requires shorter loops (generally 1.5 to 3.25 inches in length) than standard, non-elastic string.
Standard - Non-elastic strings are primarily constructed from cotton, and are available in a variety of textures and styles. Cotton string is also more cost-effective than elastic string.
Within both of these string families are a host of other options, such as specialty colors and fray-free string styles. Let your string tying vendor help you identify the best string for your specific project.
Attached Pieces
String-tied pieces are limited by only a few things: Weight, size and your imagination:
Minimums and Maximums - Flat pieces can range from 1.5" square to 5.75" wide by 8" long. Stock thicknesses can range from .004" to 1/16".
Materials - Pieces are typically constructed of paper or plastic. If excessive moisture, heat or dirt will be present, plastic may be the better choice.
Design and Decoration - Your pieces can be flat or folded, stitched, paste-bound or glued to create a booklet. Finishing processes such as die cutting, foil stamping, embossing and UV coating can augment printing to create truly unique string-tying applications.
