Tell A Product's Story One Panel at a Time with Specialty Folding

The physical form of your folded product should suit its intended use. Choosing folding patterns and sequences that mimic your intended message will help you create finished products that stand out.

Certain folding styles can be used to create finished products that gradually reveal information in sequential order. These pieces generate a sense of intrigue by “telling a story” to the end user. By harnessing the versatile folding capabilites of bindery partners to create distinct finished pieces like these, commercial printers can create value beyond the sum of their services.

Accordion Folding
Accordion folded pieces present a story one page at a time, creating a message with a clear beginning, middle and end. End users can view an accordion folded product as they’d read a book, while businesses can use each panel of an accordion fold to highlight one aspect of a product or service. Companies can also call attention to individual products by giving each item its own space and message.

Production Tip: Because accordion folds are usually created on buckle folders, the maximum recommended paper thickness is 10pt. For best results, plan accordion folds in the same direction as the paper grain. Avoid using “Dutch cut” layouts or paper requiring folds against the grain.

Roll Folding
In a roll folding sequence, each panel is turned over the next one to reveal a portion of the story. Using multiple roll folds requires each panel to be progressively undersized as the piece is opened toward the interior.

Production Tip: Roll folds made at right angles to an initial broadside fold will cause specific stress points in your product. You can avoid this problem by limiting the number of roll folds you make on each product. Our rule of thumb has always been a maximum of four folds, five if absolutely necessary. Using fewer folds will prevent the paper from ripping or tearing due to stress.

Iron Cross Folding
The unique sequential manner in which each iron cross folded piece is opened makes it an ideal choice for products that want to tell a story. As the recipient opens each panel, more information is revealed. This feature allows the designer to time the message so it gradually unfolds in text or graphics, one panel at a time.

Production Tip: Folding sequence is the most important consideration in iron cross designs and determines how the piece needs to be die cut. Make sure your design places text and graphics in the correct order to match the desired opening sequence.
