Printing Industries of Indiana-Illinois Honors Chicago Finisher with
Two “Best of Category” Nods and a Pair of “Award of Excellence” Winners
CHICAGO, IL – Rickard Bindery, a full-service trade finisher located here, received four
prestigious awards during the Printing Industries of Indiana-Illinois (PII) Achievement in
Print Excellence (APIX) Awards. The company claimed two “Best of Category” top prizes
as well as two “Award of Excellence” general prizes.
The “Best of Category” distinction is awarded to recognize superior craftsmanship and
innovation. Winners in this category are automatically entered into the Premier Print
Awards competition – known as the “Bennys” – sponsored by the Printing Industries of
America (PIA) and will be judged later this year against other regional winners from across
the country. Rickard Bindery claimed two Bennys in 2004.
“Best of Category” Winners
Rickard Bindery took the “Best of Category” award for “Binding
Process” with a 36-page security handbook for a local university. The
stitched handbook was constructed of #57 Yupo synthetic stock in a
10.5” x 3.875” oblong format. It featured an 18-step opening that gave
the appearance of tabs and significantly cast the weight of the book
towards the back. Using additional margin at the head and foot to
stabilize the product, the short spine was given two stitches with
specialized stitching heads designed to place multiple full-size stitches
within a small area.

The bindery’s second “Best of Category” honor was awarded in the
“They Said it Couldn’t Be Done” category, which recognizes pieces of
considerable technical merit. The winner was an 11-accordion fold
twelve-panel piece with each fold falling on a critical color break.
The panels cascade from either side, creating a two-sided step down.
The stock itself was laminated to the equivalent of 7.5 pt thick.
Rickard Bindery was able to set, run and ship nearly 30,000 pieces
for an Illinois lighting transformer company in less than three days.
“Our consistent appearance among the industry leaders in creativity and quality is a tribute
to the innovative nature of our customer base,” said Jack Rickard, President of Rickard
Bindery. “Working with creative and flexible people provides the best opportunity for this
type of recognition.”
“Award of Excellence” Winners
In a single pass, the bindery attached a demonstration CD for
a technologically advanced pen into the center of an iron cross
piece, which was completed with a series of plow folds and
tipper plates. The CD, which was printed with graphics that
registered to the printed carrier, was fed with a specialized
hopper for proper placement. The product was recognized in
the “Special Finishing Techniques” category.

Rickard Bindery also received recognition in the “Finishing
Pop-ups, Unique Folds and Involvement Devices” category.
Using Rickard’s proprietary pop-up technique, the bindery produced a four-page concealed
pop-up in a single pass. The pop-up was formed and folded before the outer edges of the
product were glued to conceal the ‘missing corner’ that is often associated with four-page
pop-ups. This product required the attention of multiple personnel during production due to
the dramatic angles and sharp edges of the die cut pop-up, which could easily catch on
folding equipment.
“Rickard customers continue to ask us to find ways to deliver their unique concepts,” said
Jim Egan, Account Manager at Rickard Bindery. “Finding efficient solutions to meet those
requests is a hallmark of Rickard Bindery.”
